CAPE TOWN – Western Cape police Commissioner Arno Lamoer on Friday said an inquiry into alleged negligence by Khayelitsha police has been referred to the national police commissioner’s office.

He has received a document from the Social Justice Coalition and Premier Helen Zille’s office, detailing alleged poor performance.

It includes claims of officers refusing to open domestic violence cases, lost dockets and sloppy investigations.

The coalition said this has resulted in some cases being thrown out of court.

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has responded to a Capetonian who stated publicly that she will turn her back on her Jewish roots because of the policies of the Israeli government.

In a letter to the Cape Times earlier this week, journalist Moira Levy

said because of Israel’s recent “violent racial repression”, she had cut ties with her past, legacy and family roots “and, painful as it is, turn my back on being a Jew”.

Bafana Bafana to face Brazil in September

BY Obakeng Maje

The South African Senior Men’s National Team, Bafana Bafana, has secured an international friendly match against 2014 FIFA World Cup hosts Brazil.

This high-profile clash will be played in Sao Paolo, Brazil on Friday, 7 September 2012.

The match will form part of a symbolic hand-over from the previous to present hosts of the FIFA World Cup – South Africa hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup while Brazil will host the tournament in two years’ time.

“We are honoured to be playing Brazil in their backyard as they seldom play friendly matches at home. To us this is a big coup considering it will probably be the first official match for the new Bafana Coach whom we will announce at the end of this month,” said South African Football Association (SAFA) CEO, Dr Robin Petersen.

“We are very delighted to announce that we have just received the final confirmation because we have been working on this match for the last six months,” added Dr Petersen.

The last time Bafana met the Samba Boys was on 26 June 2009 in the FIFA Confederations Cup where a late Daniel Alves free kick broke the hearts of the hosts from reaching the final.

The South American powerhouse is by far the most successful soccer playing nation in the world.

They have won the FIFA World Cup 6 times in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1982, 1994 and 2002.

They have also won the Copa America 8 times and are the only country to have played in every FIFA World Cup to date.

Yende’s future at Chiefs uncertain

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mthokozisi Yende’s future at Naturena remains uncertain after the arrival of Siyabonga Nkosi.

Yende has failed to make a great impact since he joined Amakhosi from University of Pretoria a few years ago and, with Nkosi set to be handed the number 10 jersey at Chiefs, the 28-year-old seems to have little chance of making the starting line-up.

The Phefeni Glamour Boys have already released Thela Ngobeni, Dominic Mateba, Abel Metsimetsi, Steven Ncanana and Dominic Isaacs, and Yende’s name was initially on the list of players to be let go.
