Banyana Banyana look to outplay Zambia in the AWC qualifiers

The South African Senior Women’s National Team (Banyana Banyana) will be looking to book their place in the next round of the African Women’s Championship (AWC) when they face Zambia in the second leg qualifier at the KaNyamazane Stadium in Nelspruit.

The match will take place on Saturday, 16 June 2012.

Kickoff is at 15h00.

The 8th Edition of the AWC is scheduled to be staged in Guinea later this year.

Banyana Banyana has strong ammunition for She-polopolo who lost the first leg by four goals to one (4-1) played two weeks ago in Zambia. With Russia-based striker Nompumelelo Nyandeni back in the squad, the Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana will be looking to increasing their lead. Nyandeni was unable to join her compatriots for the away fixture in Zambia due to visa issues.

The clash against Zambia takes place on Youth Day, which is a national holiday in South Africa.

“This will be a very significant match as it will be played on Youth Day and we are hoping to spread the message of unity and breaking barriers through sport in South Africa. It’s a great honour for us as young football ambassadors playing on June 1,” said Banyana Banyana captain Amanda Dlamini.

“We are going out there as the youth of South Africa to commemorate the fallen heroes who paved the way for us and created opportunities for us. While we want to qualify for the AWC, we also want to use this game to promote positive change and youth activity.”
 

According to the head coach of Banyana Banyana, Joseph Mkhonza, the first leg is now history and the focus is on a new match altogether.

“We should not dwell on the past result but should go into this game as if we are starting afresh. We need to go in there with a new mindset to ensure we don’t fall into the trap of complacency which might come back to haunt us. I told the players the advantage we have over Zambia should be forgotten,” said Mkhonza.

“We welcome back Mpumi (Nompumelelo Nyandeni) in the squad, we know that her experience will be valuable towards the team’s success. Her return is a great morale booster for the squad as we want to ensure that we qualify for the AWC as well as helping us on our journey towards the Olympics.
 
“I believe in giving all players an opportunity to represent their country, so I am going to rest some of the regular players and field those who haven’t had game time as we try new combinations. I won’t temper too much with the team because the mission remains winning our match,” added Mkhonza.
 
The AWC qualifier will be broadcast live on SABC 1 at 15h00.
 

SAFA salutes June 16 brave warriors

The South African Football Association (SAFA) would like to join the rest of South Africa in lauding the brave young men and women who marched to protest against the Bantu Education Act on this historic day in 1976.

“They fought against inequality and oppressive rules and today the rest of South Africa is enjoying the fruits of what they stood for,” said SAFA President Kirsten Nematandani.

South Africa has played in three World Cup tournaments and has hosted what FIFA has ranked as the best World Cup event ever in 2010. The country has also hosted other successful sporting events, thanks to what the protesters stood for, added Nematandani.

“Since our re-admission to the FIFA family, this country has taken its rightful place on the global sporting universe and I, on behalf of SAFA, would like to laud the youths for literally putting their bodies on the line for the freedom of this country,” he said.

The students were mainly protesting against the inferior Bantu Education because they wanted a better future for all.

“Therefore, the youths of today should appreciate what their predecessors fought for. Education is power, the youths of today must know that there is nothing that is more paramount than education. So even when you take sport as your preferred professional career, it is important to put education ahead of everything,” said the SAFA President.

On 16 June 1976, Soweto youths took to the street to protest for better education and the police responded with teargas and live ammunition.

“We must cherish what these brave warriors fought for but also be mindful that what they stood for doesn’t go to waste.”

BIESIESVLEI POLICE DISCOVERED SUSPECTED STOLEN GOODS WORTH R100 000 00

Biesiesvlei Police arrested two suspects aged between 32 and 39years for business robbery and theft on Monday, 11 June  2012 at about 8:10 after they allegedly robbed a Chines Shop.  

 

According to the information received the suspects fled the scene with the cash of R129 270.00.

The suspects also took 14 boxes of Stuyvesant cigarettes, air time vouchers, G five cellular phones, cell phone chargers DVD wires and cellphone batteries. 

The victim who had a camera installed inside the shop  managed to identify the two suspects.

 

Police went to the scene and the shop owner showed them the footage  of the video that is when they  recognised the two suspects and went to arrest them.

“There were footprints at the scene of crime and the dog handler was immediately summoned to the scene. One suspect was arrested on Tuesday and was in possession of R69 000-00, two G five cellular phones and airtime vouchers” Captain Tselana Nkala said.

 The other suspect fled and was later  arrested in Itekeng township in his possession of R26 289-00, two DVD wires, four cellphone batteries and fourteen  20 Stuyvesant.

 

It is alleged that the suspects broke the window and the burglar to gain entrance. Both suspects appeared before Lichtenburg Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 14 June 2012.

They were denied bail and they are expected to appear before the same court on Wednesday 20 June 2012.

 

 

TRUCK AND TRAIN COLLIDED IN KOSTER!!!

The road between Koster and Derby, R509 in the North West has been closed following a collision between a truck and a train carrying 29 700 kilogram of LP gas.

The accident  happened on Friday, 15 June 2012 at about 03:00 earlier hours of the morning. This occurred after the gas spilled on the road and the railway line.

The  two trucks were travelling on R509 road when they collided with each other when they tried to avoid potholes as the road is dilapidated with dongas of pot holes.

According to the information received, after the collision one of the trucks carrying frozen chickens landed on the railway line.

“The  driver and a passenger managed to escape before the truck was hit by a goods train with 12 carriages. The train derailed from the railway line” Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.

The driver and passenger of the truck as well as the driver of the train were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

 No visible injuries were detected. The driver of other truck that carried beers  which was involved in the first collision, did not sustain any injuries.

A case of reckless  and negligence driving has been opened.

The police urge motorists to use alternative routes and be patient while the accident has been cleared.

TWO ARRESTED FOR FARMER ROBBERY

The Madikwe police arrested two suspects aged 26 and 29 in the early hours of this morning 15 June 2012 at about  3:30  after they were alleged to have robbed a farmer in his cattle post in Moubane village in  the Northern side of Madikwe.

 

It is alleged that a 53-year-old cattle farmer was at his farm yesterday 14 June 2012 at about 11:20 when two suspects entered his farm and pointed him with a pistol. 

The farmer was threatened until he comply with the suspects’ demands.  The suspects robbed the farmer of his 4 firearms, 1X Revolver, 5 life rounds,2X hunting rifles and 1X pumper action, and an empty cartridge and immediately left the scene on foot. 

The farmer was not harmed and he went to the chief to report the matter and later called the police.

 

“The K9 ,  Madikwe detectives and Vispol  members followed the footsteps of the suspects into the village of Tlokweng hoping to find the suspects.  Unfortunately the police did not succeed in finding the culprits.   At about 19:00 the K9, Madikwe detectives and Vispol decided to call off the operation”Brigadier Ngubane said. 

A constable stationed at Madikwe felt the need to continue with the search with the help of three detectives and two Vispol constables.  During their search  in the early hours of today 15 June 2012 at about 3:30 the wanted 29-year-old suspect was caught hiking to Rustenburg and was found in possession of two firearms. 

The police immediately arrested the suspect who also alerted the police to where the second suspect (26) was. 

The police took action and arrested the suspect at his place in possession of the other two firearms.

 

Investigations continue and the two suspects are expected to appear before Madikwe Magistrate court on Monday 18 June 2012.

North West province experienced a lot of unrest when almost every municipality experience protests against poor service delivery. The latest protests expected to take place in Wolmaranstad and its surroundings.

According to African Conventions of the People(ACP) the march will take place today where the community expected to hand over their memorandum to their municipality.

“”We call on MEC, Chima Dodovu to take major measure and actions to solve the problem. We have been trying in vain to engage the municipalities leaders to come forward and” ACP spokesperson said.

Malema yesterday unconditionally apologized to Western Cape premier, Helen Zille. Former ANCYL and his colleagues were ordered to apologize after Western Cape High Court ruled in Zille’s favour.

 She described the insults as “racist” and “sexist” and sued the men and the ANCYL for R350 000 each. Shivambu called Helen Zille a “sick little white girl” back in 2009 and accusing of hiring her concubines.

Summons was also issued against provincial leader Andile Lili.

 Helen Zille said he is very grateful and accept the court ruling.

““I wanted the courts to draw a line on this, and this has now been done.” she told Cape Argus.

However, Zille said she had agreed to a settlement after she was asked whether she would be amenable to an apology.

The settlement was made an order of court on Thursday.

Rodgers withdrawn from Bafana Bafana squad due to club commitments!!!

Santos striker Eleazar Rodgers has been withdrawn from the Bafana Bafana squad to face Gabon in an international friendly match on Friday, 15 June 2012.

The match will be played at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, and will kickoff at 20h30.
Rodgers has been requested by his club to return to help them in the National First Division play-offs which were earlier suspended but will now resume on Wednesday, 20 June in Cape Town. Santos will face Chippa United.

“I think I am missing out on a wonderful opportunity to play for my country, but then again my club also needs me. It’s a kind of situation no player wants to find himself in, but like I have been saying everything happens for a reason. I just hope I get another chance to play for Bafana Bafana and show what I can give to the nation. It’s really sad but I have to take it the way it is. I also want to wish Bafana Bafana the best of luck against Gabon, hope they do really well,” said Rodgers.

Rodgers will depart for Cape Town on Friday morning (15 June).

The striker did not take part in the squad’s last training session at the Mbombela Stadium.

“This is out of my hands, but if you ask me I would have loved for the boy to stay and play for his country. We had worked so much with him at training and just on the eve of the match we get news that he has to return to his club. It’s a sad situation for the player and for the team, but we have to soldier on and find an alternative approach to the match,” said caretaker coach Steve Komphela, who now has 20 players to chose from for the clash against Gabon after releasing five players from the squad earlier in the week.
After two draws in the World Cup qualifiers, South Africa now faces a Gabon side that is ranked 49th in the world compared to Bafana Bafana’s 69th.

“We are optimistic that we will do well, whoever starts knows what they must do and what is expected of them.  The team has been formulated and we need the confidence and the inspiration not only for ourselves but also for the nation. It is bad when South Africans get into the mode of saying ‘I hope we win’ but we need to say a win is guaranteed irrespective of where Gabon is placed on the rankings,” said Komphela.

Meanwhile tickets for the match are still available.

Tickets on the lower and upper concourse are fifty rand each (R50) and can be bought at Computicket outlets, Shoprite and Shoprite stores around the country.

No tickets will be sold at the stadium on Match Day.

There will be a full park and ride in operation for the match on Friday, 15 June 2012 at the following pick-up points:
Riverside Mall
Public Transport Hub in the CBD
Show grounds

• All match tickets entitle spectators to use the buses

• Spectators must present a valid match ticket when boarding the buses to the Stadium

• There will be two pick -up points at the Stadium after the match that will be clearly marked

• The same buses will be travelling to Public Transport  Hub  and the Show grounds after the match

• Buses will transport spectators to the pick – up points until all spectators have left the stadium and there will be no need to rush for the buses

• There will be sufficient buses to transport all the spectators

• Buses will start leaving the pick-up points at 17h00
