The other concerns raised are security and safety as the major issue. President Jacob Zuma highlighted major deficiencies with Gauteng’s Metrorail service.

“We were in the Metrorail trains and listened to the commuters and we were cramped and sat uncomfortably. he said”

The weather gods played ball on Day Two of the SAB Under-21 Regional Championships with bright sunshine, but it rained goals at the Ingwenyama Conference and Sports Resort Grounds in Nelspruit which played host to eight matches.

Thirty (30) goals were scored on the day.

KwaZulu-Natal sparkled with their lovely inter-play, careful build up and skilful attack, while Limpopo dominated with strength bulldozing their way past opponents and displayed some good set-piece taking and the host Mpumalanga made the local fans proud. The three teams were the biggest contributors on the score sheet.

KZN’s Nkosingiphile Sondezi scored the tournament’s first hat-trick to move his tally to five after two matches to help his side beat Limpopo 3-1 and stake a strong claim in Group A where they are unbeaten. Mpumalanga thrashed North West 6-2 to remain the other province that has not lost a match. Jonathan Jarran, from the host team, scored the second hat-trick of the tournament when they defeated Group A’s whipping boys North West.

In Group B USSA are the only unbeaten side after their 1-0 win over Free State, with the goal coming from their marksman Nicolus Mynhardt. Gauteng bounced back from the disappointment of the first day to win both their matches on Day Two – 5-1 over Eastern Cape and 1-0 over Northern Cape.

The day ended in style as the players were officially welcomed with a gala dinner that had the country’s football legends John “Shoes” Moshoeu and Shakes Kungoane in attendance. They were also on hand to give young players some advice.

“Development is key in this country if we are to return to being one of the best in the world. At the moment things are not going very well in our football because we tend to take short cuts, now we need to dig deep and start from the bottom up not the other way round. If we don’t take care of our Under-21 and develop them in a good way then we will not go anywhere, and it is tournament’s like these that should play that important role,” said Moshoeu, who also serves as the tournament’s ambassador.

DAY TWO scores:

Free State  0 – 1 Northern Cape

Mpumalanga  6 – 2 North West

Limpopo 5 – 1 Western Cape

Free State 0 – 1 USSA

USSA looks to be on course to defend their SAB Under-21 Regional League Championships title they won last year.

They made their intentions clear on Day Three when they registered their third win of the tournament held at the Nelspruit Rugby Stadium on Wednesday, 13 June 2012.

USSA defeated Northern Cape by one goal to nil (1-0) in the last match of the day – Kagiso Tshungu’s strike in the 64 th minute that was deflected by Ariano van Staden into his own net.

The victory ensured USSA stay atop of Group B with nine points and a spot in the semi-finals beckoning.

Kaizer Chiefs’ Football Manager Bobby Motaung and the club’s assistant coach Ace Khuse were among the crowd.

USSA’s Lebogang Phetlhu was given his marching orders, but Vuyisile Horn failed to take advantage and shot wide from the penalty spot.

In another match, Western Cape came from two goals down to register an unexpected two-all (2-2) draw with the more-fancied KwaZulu Natal outfit that had the fans in awe with their great performance.

Nduduzo Sibiya was once again at the heart of KZN’s attack spraying passes with ease. Nkosingiphile Sondezi also continued to do what he does best – scoring goals – as he netted the opener for KZN just two minutes before halftime.

Mpumelelo Sithole made it two nil in the 54 th minute – a goal many thought was enough to secure victory, but Western Cape had other ideas.

Myana Holland pulled one back with a wonderful strike in the 63 rd minute before finding the equaliser just two minutes later.

Limpopo overcame hosts Mpumalanga by two goals to one (2-1) to leave Group A wide open. The two sides are now just one point behind leaders KZN who have seven points.

Mpumalanga took the lead 15 minutes into the match through a S’busiso Mahamba goal much to the delight of the home crowd. That excitement was however short-lived thanks to a superb strike outside the box from Limpopo captain Tommy Mandlazi.

He was not done however.

He returned to help his side to three points with his second goal in the 76 th minute, ensuring an interesting finale to Group B.

Eastern Cape slumped to their second consecutive defeat, going down two-nil (2-0) to Free State who registered their first win in the tournament after two failed attempts. The two goals came from Neels Godfrey in the first half.

Day Four on Thursday promises to be an interesting one with spots in the semi-finals up for grabs.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the last four.

Mpumalanga 1 2 Limpopo

Western Cape 2 2 KwaZulu Natal

‘My poor child was brutally murdered’

muizenberg murder

A 50-year-old man is under police guard in a hospital after he allegedly killed two children – his son and the daughter of his girlfriend – at the Village Heights informal settlement in Muizenberg.

Four-year-old Shaylin Petersen and her two-year-old half-brother Lionel died after he allegedly cut their throats.

He then tried to take his own life.

The man is being investigated for the children’s murder.

The Cape Argus went to the scene on Wednesday and spoke to Shaylin’s father, 37-year-old

Anthony Petersen.

He is no longer married to the children’s mother, Yolandie Petersen, 27.

Petersen said that he arrived at his ex-wife’s home on Wednesday afternoon where he found his daughter’s tiny, bleeding body.

There were multiple holes in her jacket.

“I couldn’t even look at my child. She was brutally murdered… My poor child. Lionel had the same cut,” he said.

Yolandie Petersen was scared of Lionel’s father, according to Anthony Petersen.

He said she went out on Wednesday morning and returned in the afternoon.

“She came back, knocked, and when there was no answer she peeped through her bedroom window and saw the children.

“She started screaming and running and the neighbours came to help,” Anthony Petersen said.

Inside the house, she was confronted by her worst nightmare.

The once-brown carpet was stained red with blood as were the children’s belongings.

A cabinet where the toddlers’ shoes were usually stacked, was spattered in blood.

Next to it was a 50 cent coin.

She (Shaylin) loved 50 cents. Every time I came here she’d say: ‘Daddy, chips, five bob’.”

“She was very fond of going to school. When her mommy went to pick her up from school, she wanted to stay there. She was a very lively and bubbly child. She was very obedient, but also a bit cheeky. She would make fun of you if she knew you,” said Anthony Petersen.

He said he “freaked out” when he received a call at work around 12.10pm on Wednesday, informing him that Shaylin was dead.

“I was very angry. It’s hurting very badly deep inside…

“How can (someone) kill an innocent child who’s done nothing?” Petersen asked.

He said he hoped that justice would be served.

Warrant Officer November Filander confirmed that a 50-year-old man, believed to be Lionel’s father, was being investigated for the murders.

He said the suspect was under police custody in a hospital.

Filander added:

“It is believed he collected (the children) from the crèche (on Wednesday) morning before committed the crimes.”

Bafana Bafana head coach interviews set for Thursday

BY Obakeng Maje

The South African Football Association’s (SAFA) Technical Committee Chairperson, Mr Fanyana Sibanyoni, has revealed that interviews for the Bafana Bafana coaching job, which were scheduled to have commenced today (Wednesday, 13 June 2012), will now all be conducted on Thursday, 14 June 2012.

This is with the exception of Bafana Bafana caretaker coach, Steve Komphela, who is in camp with the Senior Men’s National Team preparing for the international friendly match against Gabon.
The clash takes place on Friday, 15 June 2012 at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.
Komphela will be interviewed on Tuesday, 19 June 2012.

Sibanyoni said the committee arrived at the decision after concluding that conducting interviews on separate days would give an advantage to those who would come later.

“It was a procedural decision that we took as the Technical Committee. We decided that all prospective coaches will each have a two-hour presentation followed by interviews, with the exception of Steve who is on national duty,” said Sibanyoni.

“We expect to start the interviews early in the morning and everyone should have gone through the process by 16h00.”

The Technical Committee Chairperson added that once the process of interviewing the five is completed on Tuesday, the Committee will expedite the process of recommending the ranked candidates on a list from which the NEC will select the successful candidate.

“We would like to appeal to the public to support the successful candidate because people will have their own preferred candidates. There is a huge diversity of opinion on this matter that is why I am appealing to the public to welcome whoever is selected as the new Bafana Bafana Head Coach,” added Sibanyoni.

The following five candidates were identified and placed on a shortlist for the vacant Bafana Bafana head coach job.

1. Gordon Igesund   Moroka Swallows
2. Gavin Hunt   Supersport United
3. Neil Tovey   Former Bafana Bafana Captain Neil Tovey
4. Shakes Mashaba  SA U23 Coach
5. Steve Komphela  Bafana Bafana caretaker coach and Free State Stars Coach

The position was left vacant after SAFA and former coach Pitso Mosimane parted ways amicably last week.

Banyana Banyana work towards AWC qualification

BY Obakeng Maje

The South African Senior Women’s National Team (Banyana Banyana) has resumed preparations for the African Women’s Championship qualifiers where they will take on Zambia in the return leg fixture to be played at the Kanyamazane Stadium in Nelspruit on Youth Day – Saturday, 16 June 2012.

Kickoff is at 15h00.

The Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana defeated their Zambian counterparts four-one (4-1) in the first leg.

South Africa’s head coach Joseph Mkhonza has warned the players against complacency.

“Having won the first leg so comfortably, I will want the girls to continue from where they left off. So I have asked them not to relax because we have a good lead, but cautioned that this is a new match altogether and Zambia will come here for a fight to reverse the score-line. We have a few days in camp and we will use the time to analyse the last match and iron out tactical errors that we committed in the first match. The mission for us remains going for an all-out attack to get more goals and put the game beyond doubt,” said Mkhonza.

Defender Janine van Wyk has not been called-up for the training camp due to an injury she sustained in the build-up to the friendly match against Nigeria played just over a week ago (Sunday, 3 June 2012).

Also not in the squad is Robyn Moodaly who is completing her exams.

Russian based striker, Nompumelelo Nyadeni is expected to join her team mates in training tomorrow morning.
