Komphela: Success is imminent

Bafana Bafana’s interim boss Steve Komphela says a coach could be successful in this position once he understands that it is a position that belongs to the entire nation, rather than an individual.

Komphela made this interesting observation on Tuesday when he was officially handed over the reins, albeit on an interim basis, following the sacking of Pitso Mosimane.

“I will try as much as possible to remain what you want us to be and work for this nation. And I’m sure by so doing success is imminent,” says the former Bafana Bafana captain.

“The only thing that one needs to be careful about in this position is; it is not yours. This is a public position and you were just given the unique honour and privilege to be the face,” he states.

Komphela’s first match in charge will be the World Cup 2014 qualifier against Botswana on Saturday in Gaborone and he is confident Bafana can live up to expectations.

“We are fully aware of the challenge and I’m sure we could be equal to the task in terms of overcoming the challenge. We will be ready come Saturday,” Komphela adds.

Ka-ching! R10m payout for Mosimane?

Even though Pitso Mosimane has agreed to part ways with Bafana Bafana, Safa will still have to cough up a huge amount to buy him out of his contract.

Safa fired Mosimane last night, following a string of poor performance with Bafana, and KickOff.com has been reliably informed by a Safa officialthat Mosimane is still negotiating the buy-out clause on his contract.

According to the information gathered by this publication, Mosimane is demanding R10-million from Safa.

Mosimane had another two years left on his contract, and was rumoured to earn about R800 000 to R1-million a month, meaning the amount could be as high as R20-million – although Safa are unlikely to agree on such a sum.

“The issue of Safa and Pitso Mosimane is not yet over,” our source at Safa says. “They are still negotiating the buy-out of his contract and the coach wants nothing less than R10-million to walk out of his contract with Safa.”

Meanwhile, Safa has appointed Steve Komphela as interim coach for the matches against Botswana and Gabon.

Cape’s R78m road fines bonanza

IOL news june 5 fines done 0941 (25897622)

By Bronwynne Jooste

The City of Cape Town has netted over R78 million in income from traffic fines since the start of this financial year.

In total, the figure collected was R121m. Of that, R43m was paid to the city’s service provider Syntell.

These figures account for the period between July 2011 and April 2012, and were tabled before the city’s finance portfolio committee yesterday.

JP Smith, the city’s mayoral committee member for safety and security, said that, on average, 130 000 traffic offences were recorded each month on Cape Town’s roads.

He said the average monthly traffic fine income was R13m.

Smith said the fine recovery rate was around 50 percent. But the city hoped a series of moves over the next few months would bring that figure to 90 percent.

In the next few months, 20 extra traffic officers would be employed to work solely to execute warrants and serve summonses.

From the beginning of July, there would be more “spy cars” on Cape Town’s roads. These are vehicles fitted with automatic number plate recognition. This would allow officers to “double” Operation Reclaim roadblocks from the beginning of next month.

Smith said the city had also formed an agreement with the provincial department of justice which would see the expansion of municipal courts. From September, three more magistrates and two more prosecutors will be employed. Courts will also sit on multiple days.

The operations would be focused on serial offenders who fail to settle large amounts of outstanding fines.

“We’re not interested in the soft targets. We’re going after the guys who constantly offend and evade the consequences. Those who fail to appear in court… we want 100 percent collections of those warrants.”

On Monday, the city’s finance portfolio committee meeting heard there were cases of officers filling in forms incorrectly. This was leading to a loss of potential income from those fines.

Ian Iversen, a member of the portfolio committee, said he had heard of cases where officers did not fill in the correct suburb when issuing a fine.

Figures show April had the lowest traffic fine income since July last year.

In April, the city earned just over R6m. A further R3.2m was paid to Syntell, which provides camera services to the city. Syntell also handles the processing system for traffic fines.

For the rest of the period, monthly fine income ranged between R7m and R9m, after deducting the fee for the service provider.

The highest amount collected over that period was in July last year, when the net income was R9m, with another R4.9m going to Syntell.

The report states that in the 2010/11 financial year, R142m was generated from traffic fines.

The city has repeatedly taken a hard line against repeat offenders, arresting motorists with outstanding warrants of arrest at their homes and workplaces across Cape Town.

Merle Lourens, city traffic spokeswoman, encouraged motorists to continue settling their outstanding fines.

“Even better, motorists, should try not to commit violations in the first place,” she said. – Cape Argus

Court to view ‘rape’ video

CCTV footage showing a 20-year-old woman being raped will be shown during the trial of her alleged rapist.

Njungo Kiveit, 27, has pleaded not guilty in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court to a charge of rape.

He told magistrate Rose Mogwera on Monday that on the night of June 19 last year, he had met the woman at the Kismet hotel bar.

He said that they had kissed and had spoken of having sex.

The two then left the bar and were walking along Retief Street when he began proposing love to her.

“I put my arm around her, but she was having none of it. I then became aggressive and pinned her to the wall. She then dropped to the ground and I pulled down her pants and tried to rape her,” Kiveit said.

He said the police arrived before he could penetrate the woman.

The victim testified that Kiveit had followed her out of the bar.

“I was quite drunk and tried to walk faster but he grabbed me by my clothes and made me fall to the ground,” the woman said.

She said Kiveit pulled down her pants and raped her.

”When I tried to scream for help he strangled me,” the woman said.

CCTV footage allegedly depicts Kiveit attacking the woman and police having to physically drag him off her after several verbal warnings.

The trial continues. – Daily News

Luvhengo believes his side can get much much better

BY Obakeng Maje

The South African Under 20 Men’s National Team (Amajita) coach Solly Luvhengo and his brave band of players can take many positives from their outstanding performances in the 8-Nation International Tournament which ended at the Cape Town Stadium on Sunday, 3 June with Brazil beating Argentina 2-0 in the final.

The campaign had started with Amajita’s 3-1 defeat to Argentina in the opening game. But even Argentine coach Marcelo Trobbiani admitted the score-line had been flattening, and since then, Amajita simply got better and better as the tournament progressed.

Defensive frailties were ironed out and a more clinical touch was found in front of goal. With the exception of the semi-final penalty defeat to Brazil, South Africa remained undefeated for the remainder of the tournament, scoring six goals and conceding three as they beat Ghana, Nigeria and Japan.

They were viewed by many as the most exciting team in the tournament, thanks to their dynamic interplay and breathtaking speed when on attack, and were arguably the better side against Brazil, who were made to sweat for their victory in the semi-final, winning on penalties after the game had ended 2-2 after 120 minutes.

Amajita striker Thabani Mthembu was awarded the Top Goal-Scorer award for his impressive goal tally of five in five matches.

Midfielder Snethemba Ngidi shone throughout the competition with some wonderful attacking play and was amongst three nominees for Player of the Tournament, the accolade however going to Brazil’s Misael Bueno.

The entire squad was in attendance at the post-match press conference, where they were warmly received by the media and given a standing ovation for the pride their performances brought to the nation.

“I felt we were better than them and worked harder,” said Luvhengo of the performance against Japan, which they won 7-6 on penalties after the game had ended 1-1. “At stages we dropped off and allowed them too much space. We should have won the game in the first half.

“When you work so hard you always deserve to get something from your hard work. You saw us celebrating on the pitch. But we were not celebrating third position, we were celebrating the results of hard work,” he added.

It was important that the coach motivate his players after they had narrowly lost out on a place in the final, and judging by another impressive display against the Asian side, Luvhengo had done exactly that.

“I felt we deserved to have been in the final. It was disappointing not to, but I told the players ahead of the play-off against Japan – go and reward yourselves for your hard work (by picking up a medal).

“Sometimes you work hard and you don’t get anything. But I’ll take the bronze medal and build from that.”

Going forward, the Venda-born coach is optimistic that his team will continue to improve and fly the South African flag high in international competition.

“I’m very happy with the work ethic. I’m very happy with the team spirit. I’m very happy with the chances we are creating.

“I’m not happy with the finishing, we must work on that. Maybe at some moments we switch off a little bit. That’s expected at youth level, but as a coach you need to keep your players on their toes and keep reminding them.

“If we get more time together, these actions will start synchronising themselves and we will get much, much better.”

Johannesburg – SA Football Association CEO Dr Robin Petersen says the association will be indebted to Pitso Mosimane for the work he has done since his appointment as coach.

Mosimane was sacked as Bafana Bafana head coach, SAFA confirmed on Tuesday morning.

SAFA president Kirsten Nematandani revealed that Mosimane is the only coach that has assisted SAFA by donating a portion of his salary in the pursuit of the development agenda of the association which included assisting the ex-professional football players to attend the coaching course that is currently on-going at SAFA House.

IOL cat helicopter june 5

As the old saying almost goes, there’s more than one way to spin a cat.

But until now, nobody has thought of turning one into a helicopter. This bizarre remote-controlled flying feline is the work of artist Bart Jansen.

Jansen said the Orvillecopter is part of a visual art project which pays tribute to his cat Orville, by making it fly after it was killed by a car.

Jansen had him stuffed and attached rotor blades to his outstretched front paws.

He built the Orvillecopter together with radio control helicopter flyer Arjen Beltman.

Royal repossession for KZN prince

nm mdlamini

By Kamini Padayachee and Tania Broughton

Despite his last-minute negotiations with Nedbank, would-be king, Prince Mmelizwe Dlamini’s luxury La Lucia home was sold for R3.2 million on auction on Monday to a Durban buyer who declined to be named.

Nedbank claimed in court papers that Dlamini had failed to keep up the R30 000 monthly bond instalments and owed more than R3m.

The bank obtained judgment against Dlamini in March and the house was handed over to the Inanda sheriff’s office for it to be auctioned off.

Last week, Dlamini’s lawyer Rajesh Sunker said his client was in negotiations with the bank to try to prevent the sale.

Dlamini has battled since 2003 to have the government recognise him as a king.

He claims he is the leader of the Nhlangwini kingdom, near Highflats and wants to be given the same status as Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini.

He pleaded his case for kingship before the Commission on Traditional Leadership Disputes and Claims in April this year and is awaiting its decision.

On Monday, the sale of the double-storey Ellingham Drive property was meant to start after 9am but was delayed because of a defect in a notice in the Government Gazette.

While potential buyers, including Pietermaritzburg businessman Sunny Gayadin, kicked their heels at the sheriffs office, Nedbank’s lawyers dashed to the Durban High court to get an order compelling Sheriff RR Singh to proceed with the sale.

In papers before Acting Judge Nalini Govender, the lawyers said Singh had told them on Friday that he would not hold the auction because the notice incorrectly stated that the conditions of sale could be inspected at the sheriff of Pinetown’s office, instead of the sheriff of Inanda District Two.

The lawyers said the mistake had been made by the government printers but elsewhere in the notice, and in the heading, the details were correct.

Acting Judge Govender ruled that the sale should go ahead.

Before the auction, potential buyers questioned whether an eviction order would be required to get Dlamini off the property once it was sold.

The Mercury reported last week that auctioneer Ian Wyles’s assistant Edward Nxumalo was kicked off the property when he had attempted to take pictures of the house.

After an intense bidding battle, a Durban entrepreneur purchased the house. He will have to pay an outstanding rates bill of R339 000 and is not guaranteed vacant occupation.

The Mercury tried to contact Dlamini for comment but was referred to a Penuel Dlamini, the Nhlangwini’s tribe’s head of protcol.

Penuel said he could not comment on whether Dlamini would move out of the home.

“It is a royal matter. We are not allowed to talk about it.”

Sunker could not be reached for comment. – The Mercury

Three kids die in house fire

iol news pic fire brigade june 5

Three children from Randfontein burnt to death on Sunday night after their house caught fire and a local fire engine did not have enough water to extinguish the blaze, it was reported on Tuesday.

The Beeld reported that Salome Jordaan, 11, Tanya Jordaan, 4, and Armand Jordaan, 3, died in the blaze, and their 14-year-old sister Adri, was seriously injured.

Kallie Hoffman, who lived in an outbuilding on the property, told the newspaper that emergency services took an hour to arrive at the scene.

Franz Olckers, a family friend, said they left after a few minutes to go and get more water at a local shopping centre.

The fire brigade returned half an hour later, but the house had burned down.

“Apart from the fact that the fire engine did not have enough water, it looked to me as if their pipes were full of holes – water was squirting through the sides of the pipes like fountains,” he said.

Neighbours said the Randfontein municipality had removed the family’s fuse box around two weeks ago, and that they had been using candles, one of which had presumably fallen over and caused the blaze. – Sapa
