Police told to investigate all complaints

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa

Malungelo Booi | 04 May 2012CAPE TOWN – Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa said officers need to investigate every complaint made at a police station.

Mthethwa was speaking in Lwandle Township near Strand on Thursday.

He heard firsthand from residents, who accused police of failing to address their concerns over crime.

One woman complained that she was called names when she went to report a case of theft.

Another man told the minister that local station commander; Bongani Mathakathi, slapped him for no valid reason.

But Mthakathi rejected the allegations.

Mthethwa said they will look into all the issues raised.

“What is important is that we listened to what people said, and we have committed ourselves to ensuring what they have raised is attended to by management.”

Mthethwa called on members of the station management and made them commit themselves in front of the community.

“The working relationship between the police and the community is essential if we are going to win the fight against crime in our areas.”

Pothole Brigade gets dumped!!!

No More Pothole Brigade

BY Jacob Moshokoa

JOHANNESBURG – The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) warned on Thursday that the scrapping of the Pothole Brigade will affect the growth of the country’s economy in the long run.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) was forced to formalise procedures through a tender process which they were unable to do.

“The pothole brigade has had successes,” SACCI’s Neren Rau.

“The impact of potholes is substantial in terms of being an impediment of transporting goods and it can add to the cost of moving goods when those potholes result in damage to vehicles.”

Dial Direct told Eyewitness News on Thursday it was shocked that the JRA halted their efforts in providing the pothole brigade service to road users.

The initiative will be scrapped at the end of next month after repairing an estimated 50,000 potholes since its inception.

The JRA had to formalise procedures through a tender process which never materialised.

Dial Direct’s Bradley du Chenne said it was surprising that local government requested businesses to intervene and do more for communities when an initiative like the pothole brigade is sidelined.

“So we come along with a recommendation of how we can assist and the next thing is the JRA let some bureaucracy and red tape get in the way of what we were providing.”

Du Chenne added they were forced to weigh-up the costs of the initiative and without the support of authorities they have no option but to wrap up the operation.

Motorists have until the end of May to report any potholes for repair.

CAPE TOWN – Western Cape Premier Helen Zille said they have received R16m from government to create job opportunities for hundreds of unemployed youth in the province.

Zille’s Advancement of Youth Project (PAY) was launched at the College of Cape Town on Thursday.

The PAY initiative will give more than 800 youngsters who matriculated in 2011 an opportunity to be interns in local government until the end of the year.

“We will deploy 850 youth to work throughout this year as interns in a range of different capacities. Those who do well will be employed on merit, effort and the value they add.”

‘Boks ready for England’

CAPE TOWN – South Africa’s three training camps in preparation for England’s tour next month have given Heyneke Meyer plenty of confidence, the Springbok coach said on Thursday.

The three-test tour which starts on June 9 in Durban will be Meyer’s first in charge of the Springboks and he will be pressed for time to prepare as the majority of his squad will be involved in Super Rugby until the week before the first test.

But Meyer, who held training camps with 104 players in which he had one-on-one discussions with each player, said he was pleased with the situation.

“To go into the series against England with the amount of base work we’ve done, is something I didn’t foresee and it gives me a great deal of confidence for next month,” Meyer said in a statement.

“It was always going to be a big ask to start from scratch with less than a week before we face the English, but these camps helped a lot in allaying some of the concerns I’ve had,” he added.

The South African Rugby Union also confirmed that Johann van Graan (forwards), Ricardo Loubscher (backs) and John McFarland (defence) would form part of Meyer’s support staff.

Basil Carzis has been appointed as conditioning coach and Ian Schwartz will be the team manager.

Drogba: I’m staying at Pirates!!!

Bongani Ndulula says he will definitely still be at Orlando Pirates next season, despite seeing precious little game-time in the past few months.

‘Drogba’ caught the eye early in the season with some strong performances before injury hampered his progress and, upon his return, he struggled to break into the first team, despite banging in the goals in the Reserve League.

A possible loan move has been touted, while Ajax Cape Town also made known their interest during the January transfer window, but Ndulula insists he is staying with The Buccaneers.

“Rest assured, I will be an Orlando Pirates player next season,” he tells KickOff.com.

He adds: “I’m not injured, I’m in good condition, but the team is performing well and the coach [Augusto Palacios] has his plans what he wants to do.

“I feel there is no need for the coach to change a winning team. When the 11 players in the starting line-up are helping the team to win matches, it’s not only them winning, but the entire club.

“Of course it is every player’s wish to play all the matches and I am no different, but the coach has his plans and I respect that.”

Gang terrorises Durban residents!!!

IOL news dec 30 gun_dec 8

By Yogas Nair

A gang of vicious armed robbers – undeterred by electric fences, security gates, vicious dogs or armed response units – has been terrorising families in upmarket suburbs in Durban, raiding 17 homes in 21 days.

Hardest hit have been the Highway area comprising Westville, Pinetown, Hillcrest, Kloof, Gillitts, Forest Hill, New Germany and Waterfall.

In several instances children had been held at gunpoint and teenage girls threatened with rape, according to private investigator, Brad Nathanson.

Dubbed the “Isuzu gang” because they are known to travel in a white Isuzu bakkie, the robbers also been operating with an older model Mercedes-Benz (W126) apparently stolen from Lillian Ngoyi (Windermere) Road last week.

“These thugs are part of a much bigger syndicate. They are very clear about what they want: electronic equipment, cash and jewellery,” he said.

“To ensure that the victims give them valuables, they resort to assaulting the adults and threatening their children. In all the incidents, the victims were bound with cable ties.”

KZN police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker, said police were looking at ways of deploying more resources in the area to combat the problem.

According to Darryn le Grange, managing director of Blue Security, there had been a dramatic increase in both contact (hijackings and house robberies) and non-contact crimes (theft) for March in these areas.

“The average over the past 10 months was 25 contact crimes a month,” he said. “This spiked to 36 in March. Non-contact crimes increased from an average of 267 to 357 over the same period.”

Le Grange said in most instances the robbers arrived at the targeted house in a vehicle.

“They derail the driveway gate, hold up the residents at gunpoint for about an hour or more and terrorise them into complying with their demands before fleeing with valuables, often in the victim’s vehicle.”

In a recent incident, a Gillitts couple and their daughter were terrorised by five armed robbers, who gained entry to the house through an open sliding door.

He said the three were made to lie on the floor while the suspects demanded valuables. “They were in the house for about an hour.

“They made off with a plasma TV set, jewellery, cash, foreign currency, cellphones, bank cards and identity documents.” Le Grange said the robbers bundled the stolen goods in a sheet and loaded them into the victim’s double-cab bakkie.

Nathanson said a blind Kloof father and his 17-year-old daughter were receiving counselling after an hour-long ordeal at the weekend.

He said the father was repeatedly assaulted with the butt of a gun while the daughter was made to strip naked.

“They repeatedly threatened to rape her if he did not co-operate with them. They dragged her across the house shouting and screaming,” he said. “They were merciless.”

He said the father alerted him to the robbery.

“When I got to the scene, it was a pathetic sight. The two of them were in really bad shape. It seemed like the robbers hit the wrong house,” Nathanson said. “The dad said he could hear them talking on the cellphone in English and Zulu. It seemed like they were taking orders from someone.

“He said they kept demanding a plasma television and Krugerrand coins.”

On Saturday, several adults and two children suffered a similar fate, Nathanson said.

He said they, too, were terrorised for over an hour while the robbers ransacked their house. A two-year-old had a gun at his head during the robbery.

Nathanson described the raiders as “fearless and ugly”.

“Nothing deters them. No electric fences, security gates, armed response of vicious dogs. They are a hard-hitting gang who will resort to killing if they have to.”

He said it was difficult to pin the gang down: “They are on top of everything. They even listen in on the police radio frequency… But, they will slip up and the cops will be there.”

Nathanson blamed the spike in house robberies on the disbanding of the SAPS’s organised crime unit at Cato Manor.

“They were tasked to investigate these cases and their network of informers resulted in many robberies being foiled.

“Since the unit was disbanded, the stats speak for themselves. A specialised unit needs to take charge before it gets any worse. People are living in fear in their own homes.”

Westville Community Police Forum (CPF) chairman, Kevin Harvey, said they were concerned about the increase.

“There appears to be two gangs operating in Westville. One is a well-organised gang that carefully plans the hit while the other appears to be more opportunistic. They drive around and strike when families are having functions or if they see an open door.”

He said while no one had been seriously injured during any of the robberies, there had been death threats.

“These gangs are merciless. We are appealing to residents not to resist.

“They will not hesitate to kill. Life is far more valuable than any possession.

“Let them take what they want and leave!”

MaryLou Giliam, secretary of the Kloof CPF, said a gang of about five was operating in the area and terrorising residents.

They were known to hit in the early evenings and followed the same modus operandi.

She confirmed several women had been threatened with rape during the robberies and that the robbers had pistol-whipped some victims.

Lid blown off boiled money scam!!!

IOL news bribery_money apr 23

An Eastern Cape woman was duped into believing her cash would grow by boiling it in chemicals, police said on Thursday.

Two men approached a shebeen owner in Tyiweni Location, Dutywa, on Wednesday and told her they could make her rich, said Captain Jackson Manatha.

The men, aged 38 and 45, asked her for a R10 note. She borrowed one from a relative, and gave it to them.

“The suspects mixed the money with certain chemicals and boiled it,” he said.

They returned with three R10 notes, each with different serial numbers.

Manatha said the notes were later found to be “very high quality forgeries” which, “given to an unsuspecting person, they would not know they were fake”.

“The 46-year-old tavern owner was then told to withdraw R1 000 which would be cooked and would become thousands of rands,” he said.

“It is alleged that she withdrew the money, but before it was cooked police were tipped off about the scam.”

The men were arrested and would appear in the Dutywa Magistrate’s Court on Friday, said Manatha. – Sapa

Future Dikwena Coach Unknown!!!

After it was announced that Platinum Stars had parted ways with their coach, Owen Da Gama, the club’s general manager, Jason Raine, explained that the club has not yet earmarked a replacement.

Cavin Johnson and Allan Freese have been the men at the helm of Dikwena since Da Gama was suspended last month and, while Raine confirmed that they would carry on until the end of the season, he said that he was unsure what the long-term future held.

The Dikwena GM told the Siya crew, “Yes, we’ve only got three games left and I think we’ve seen what’s happened to some of our more established clubs what happens when you change coach so close to the end of the season. It’s clear that they’ve (Johnson and Freese) done the job exceptionally well under the circumstances, we were in 13th position when they took over and we’re now in 10th.

“I was working a lot on the issue with Owen, so we haven’t had a chance to discuss what we’re going to do about the future. Are we going to look for a new coach? Are we going to ask Cavin and Allan? We’ll have the discussions with the rest of the board members in the week. We’ll talk about what we want to do and then make a decision.”

Raine also explained that, even though the duo had done well, he couldn’t see the pair of them taking the Stars job on a permanent basis. He said, “The situation of joint coaching is not ideal in the long-term, you need a head coach who is going to be the man who is answerable and who makes decisions, so we have to still go down that road and decide.”

The Phokeng-based club have set themselves a target of finishing in the PSL’s top eight and will hope that Johnson and Freese have what it takes to set the team up nicely for next season’s campaign.

Sandilands: I’m not to blame!!!

Courtesy of http://www.kickoff.com

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands says they let themselves down badly in the 2-0 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium last night.

Sundowns went into the match needing a win to draw level with Orlando Pirates at the top of the League standings, but delivered a below-par performance as goals from Sthembiso Ngcobo and Siphiwe Tshabalala ruined the party.

Sandilands himself was seemingly directly at fault for the first goal – running past Shabba’s long ball to gift Ngcobo the opener – though he insists the blame can’t lay with him.

“We definitely let ourselves down because if it wasn’t for that first goal we would have at least got a point,” Sandilands tells KickOff.com

“I’m not to blame for that first goal because I made a correct decision by coming out. Perhaps I took my eyes of the ball, but even then the ball was not far from Siyanda [Xulu].

“But overall I think we didn’t create enough scoring opportunities because I don’t remember [Itumeleng] Khune diving for a shot at goal.”

Sundowns are nowthree points behind Pirates with two tough matches remaining against SuperSport United and Free State Stars.

“We can still win the League because if we don’t believe then why are still playing?”
