AFCON 3013 logo

Cabinet has given the nod to South Africa hosting the 2013 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2014 African Nations Championships (CHAN) and has announced the cities that will host these tournaments.

Speaking at a post-Cabinet briefing on Friday, Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula announced that the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2013 Afcon will be played at Johannesburg’s Soccer City, known as FNB Stadium.

Matches will take place in Port Elizabeth (Nelson Mandela Bay), Rustenburg (Royal Bafokeng), eThekwini (Moses Mabhida Stadium) and Mbombela (Mbombela Stadium).

The minister said the cities of Polokwane, Kimberley, Mangaung and Cape Town will host the 2014 CHAN tournaments.

Government will soon meet with the South African Football Association (Safa) Local Organising Committee (LOC) to finalise among others government representation on the LOC.

Mbalula said that a joint task team was in place, comprising Sport and Recreation, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and National Treasury, which will meet with the host cities individually to discuss financial matters.

The 2013 Afcon will begin on 19 January and end on 10 February, with 16 teams set to participate.

South Africa will host the two continental tournaments that were initially scheduled to be played in Libya, but could not be played in that country which is currently ravaged by civil war.

The South African Football Association (Safa) and the Football Federation of Libya signed an agreement regarding the hosting of the 2013 and the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournaments.

In terms of the agreement, Libya will host the 2017 Afcon, which had been awarded to South Africa, while Safa will take over the hosting of the 2013 CHAN as well as the 2014 Afcon, which was meant to be played in Libya.

Rape video: Teen’s ‘kidnapper’ may walk!!!!

Johannesburg – Charges against a man accused of kidnapping and raping a Soweto teenager, also the victim of a video-taped gang rape, were provisionally withdrawn on Friday.

No reasons were given for the withdrawal in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court. The 37-year-old man briefly appeared wearing a windbreaker.

He had been accused of holding the 17-year-old mentally disabled girl against her will at his house in Braamfischerville, Soweto.

At an earlier court appearance, he was told to hire a lawyer, or to submit a request for Legal Aid. The girl went missing on March 21 and was found at the man’s house in a search launched after police became aware of the rape video.

Four boys and three men, who matched the descriptions of rapists shown in a cellphone video of the attack, were arrested in Dobsonville, Soweto, on 17 April. The video was widely circulated on the internet from 18 April.

The four minors were granted bail by the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

CT allegedly out of Afcon hosting!!!

After delaying the announcement three times, the 2013 Afcon host cities are set to be announced this morning – although it seems Cape Town is not one of them.

Safa cancelled yesterday’s press conference, saying it is yet to finalise the five venues for the Africa Cup of Nations next year, and called another for this morning at 9am, where Minister of Sport and Recreation Fikile Mbalula is likely to confirm the successful bidders.

Eight cities made their original presentations to the LOC on 21 March, and the hosts were to be announced on April 4, but financial concerns led to the cities of Johannesburg and Cape Town refusing to sign an agreement, and the announcement was postponed to April 20, and then yesterday.

It was decided that through “government guarantees” cities would be given financial aid towards the costs of the tournament, and an Inter-Ministerial Committee was set up to hash out the details with the LOC.

Today unconfirmed reports state that PE, Durban, Rustenburg, Mbombela will definitely host Afcon matches, with Johannesburg to be confirmed today. Cape Town is understood not to have agreed the terms of hosting.

Segolela: I know I must improve

Tlou Segolela - Orlando Pirates v Tottenham Hotspur - Pre-Season Friendly

Orlando Pirates winger Tlou Segolela has admitted that he has been blowing hot and cold this season.

Sox was speaking to other soccer publication – and he says there is room for improvement in his game.

“I can say my problem was because I got a knee injury at the start of the season. I started well, but I was out between September and October and I think that’s the real reason I haven’t been consistent this season. It is something that I’m aware of and I’m working on it,” Segolela admits.

“I think to be in top form you must play regularly and since the injury I have struggled, because since then I started some games and came on as a substitute in some of them. I think I will be back to my best once I can play more games in a row. It is disappointing for me as well that I’m blowing hot and cold, but I’m not relaxing. I’m always working hard to make sure I’m in top form all the time,” he says.

Segolela feels his major flaw is the final pass, but Bucs coach Augusto Palacios has put together a training programme to assist the midfielder improve on it.

“I am disappointed with my final pass, but I know with time I will get it right. I just need to concentrate more on it so I can perfect it… Augusto actually spoke to me about it and he prepared a training programme for me.

“Basically, I go through the cones just like I would dribble around players and when I reach the box I target one of the cones around so the whole idea is to help me not to rush things. I must look at what’s happening around the box so I can pick out my teammates with a pass. I do the training on a regular basis and I hope for some improvement soon,” he adds-kickoff.com

Komphela: We have killed big Sharks!!!

Steve Komphela @ Backpagepix

Steve Komphela, the eloquently-spoken Free State Stars coach, is not intimidated by ‘giants’.

At a press conference on Thursday afternoon as part of the build-up to the Nedbank Cup semi-final clash against Mamelodi Sundowns, Komphela was on a roll – bullish in his mood and adamant that his side will continue to deal with ‘sharks’.

“In this PSL, there are many Sharks, others are big, others are small, others are white sharks. We have played two big sharks already – tough matches. Now we have another shark on Saturday, we have to face them.

“You cannot match sharks. You can just threaten them. Right now we are only threatening Sundowns. I know their defeat to Chiefs in midweek makes them dangerous,” he told reporters..

Mamelodi Sundowns suffered a heavy blow in their aspirations to clinch the League trophy this past Wednesday when they went down 2-0 to Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium. The loss makes Saturday’s Nedbank Cup even more important for the Brazilians who have not won anything this season despite boasting with a star-studded squad.

Free State Stars, on the other hand, have been a remarkable story this season under Komphela’s guidance. Not only have they been impressive in League games, they have also put spirited performances in Cup competitions.

In the Nedbank Cup, they have already eliminated Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

“People stop me in the streets and say, ‘since you have beaten both Chiefs and Pirates, you might as well go and win the Nedbank Cup’. It’s not that easy. Sundowns are a good side.

“It’s nice to hear positive remarks, but it’s nicer to get negative ones. If you listen too much to what people say, you lose.

“I want players who are willing to leave a sweat on the field.”
